Gwen helps wildfire victims

Gwen Stefani is taking a detour from entertainment into charity, starting a college-scholarship fund for students affected by this fall's California wildfires. "When I heard about the devastation of the fires, at first I felt I should cancel my [San Diego] show out of respect," Stefani, 38, said in a statement, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. "But then it occurred to me there might be a more useful solution." That led to the Gwen Stefani After-the-Fires Scholarship, which will benefit students who lost their homes or sources of income in the fires. Details of the fund are still being worked out. Stefani also donated about $160,000 in proceeds from her Oct. 30 concert in San Diego to the San Diego Foundation fire-relief fund. The wildfires raced through Southern California in late October and forced hundreds of thousands from their homes.

Gwen to tone down show for Muslims

Gwen Stefani has agreed to respect local customs and not wear revealing costumes for her upcoming concert in Malaysia. After protests from Muslim students about her sexy outfits, the show's producer said Stefani will follow the local code of ethics for foreign artists, which says female artists must cover up from the to top of the chest to the knees including the shoulders. No jumping, shouting, hugging, kissing or throwing of objects on stage or at the audience is allowed. The National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students, which counts 10,000 members, say Stefani's standard show clashes with Islamic values. "Her performance and her attire are not suitable for our culture. It promotes a certain degree of obscenity and will encourage youth to emulate the western lifestyle," said the union's president. "The concert should be stopped." senior official of the country's Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry said the concert will go on but that enforcement officers would meet with Stefani beforehand to remind her of local guidelines and monitor her show: "There is no problem so far. [The promoter] has told us what clothes she will wear for the concert."

Gwen to helm new mag?

Will Gwen Stefani be the next celeb to have a magazine attached to her name? Rumor is that the popstar is coupling with Jane mag founder Jane Pratt to develop a new glossy for teens and 20-somethings. When Jane folded, Pratt alluded to a new project though didn't mention Stefani, but the L.A.M.B. designer may just be the perfect muse for the project.

Gwen suing over copycat designs

Gwen Stefani is suing the retail chain Forever 21 for trademark infringement. In papers filed in LA Federal Court, reps for the singer's Harajuku Lovers line claim Forever 21 is marketing, promoting and selling products featuring a design "virtually indistinguishable" from Harajuku's heart/box logo. The clothing chain is alleged to have "changed a couple of words in the Heart/Box Trademark, which are inconspicuous and likely to go unnoticed by a consumer." The Forever 21 designs use the same logo but call their line "Forever Love."

On the town

  • Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson were hurried out of Tom Ford's Madison Avenue store when they arrived close to closing. "Well, are you going to buy anything?" the manager asked, not realizing who they were.
  • Hilary and Haylie Duff stocked up on Missoni shoes and Tom Ford sunglasses in Miami over the weekend - and actually paid for their loot.
  • Verizon Wireless has withdrawn its sponsorship of Gwen Stefani's tour after opening act Akon was videotaped performing simulated sex onstage with a 15-year-old in Trinidad.
  • Sex & the City alum Cynthia Nixon will kick off the ninth season of Law & Order: SVU, appearing as a woman with multiple personalities thought to have abused her baby.
  • Lawyers for Lindsay Lohan are demanding that the British newspaper News of the World produce the videotape they claim shows the actress snorting coke.
  • Rosie O'Donnell has her eye on Bob Barker's gig at The Price is Right, but the outgoing host "is adamant that Rosie not get the gig," according to a source.

SJP takes digs at Gwen and young Hollywood

Sarah Jessica Parker took a dig at fellow celebrity designer Gwen Stefani while promoting her new fashion line, Bitten. Parker described Stefani's work as "much more avante-garde, definitely high fashion" to Glamour mag and added, "I don't want to do that for women, because that's not their lives... You're going to be able to buy $200 worth of clothes, leave that store with six bags and be able to pay your utilities and take your kids someplace special for their birthday." Parker has been open about growing up in a poor family, and tells the mag, "I got all of my oldest sister's hand-me-downs. And by the time I inherited them, they were really out of fashion." Parker also took a swipe at young Hollywood starlets: "Look how celebrities are acting these days," she said. "People are getting attention for doing nothing, for behaving poorly, for abusing themselves in public and being abused, exploiting themselves. I find it vulgar, and I find it awful."
